Galaxy Sized Environments To Explore – In A Game – Grasp 16′

Space is pretty big, in fact it is very big. So incomprehensibly big it falls in to that part of our comprehending that simply cannot process such scales. So imagine a computer game where you don’t have to comprehend this scale, you can experience and explore it, where you can venture into a virtual area containing 18 quintillion (1.8×1019) worlds. This is the case with a new PC/PS4 release “No Mans Sky” drawing on a clever process of coded randomised generation of unique entities within this gaming space whether it be trees, animals or whole worlds.

Here at Grasp we get precious little time to play games, as we prefer the company of the opposite sex, BUT a game that has the scope of an entire galaxy to explore? That’s at least worth a look in.  After all the significance isn’t necessary the game itself, but the advent of a new generation of games. Have you been seeing kids walking around aimlessly in the middle of a field with their eyes pressed up against their phone screen? Well this is owed to the well known “Pokemon Go” phenomenon, where immersion is the concept. With No Mans Sky, exploring and sheer scale is largely the concept. Both of these concepts are far reaching and very bold and perhaps a sign of things to come. Immersion via the Oculus Rift virtual reality device shows that the market is ready for this kind of entertainment but perhaps the vast majority of people’s wallets are not.

We are now starting to reach a form of gaming that is able to make people partition their very lifestyles into two clearly defined parts, one the reality, one the gaming. Immersion is becoming the new norm and the question has to be whether further down the line we will essentially live as we always have using the trusty five senses to interact with the world but include an immersion aspect to enhance our way of living. Furthermore if you are able to create gaming areas the size of galaxies then you are able to work within a conceptualized area that could broaden the minds of a new generation of gamers.
