Should I Sacrifice My Privacy For Security – The Big Debate? – Grasp Support ’15

Continuing our look into IT ahead in 2015, time to get a bit serious now as we now approach the sticky subject of our personal internet privacy and government level “snooping” for national security via ISPs and the internet as a whole.

Now more than ever, we are told that national security is at an all time high. Now this is a debate in itself however we aren’t concerned with that particular can of worms. The issue is that our ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are extraordinarily vague on volunteering information on just how much government level monitoring is being conducted on us on a daily basis into our private information.

Our government have at least made no mistake in saying that they have allowed themselves greater freedom through legislation to investigate and monitor online activity that might be deemed to be a national security risk. This can range from automated systems picking up on keywords you have typed on your social media platforms right the way to monitoring your emails and phone calls. The truth is nobody really knows the full extent and capabilities that are available with the top brass to analyse your activity much less the resources they are using to accomplish this. One ministry level employee will say that the funding and resourcing for such endeavours is highly limited and that it has to adheer to a budget just the same as any other legislation and then another will say it is a bottomless pit of money that is available for the good cause of preventing homeland attacks that unfortunately tax payers will have to stomach.

All of this culminates into one core question that seems to divide people down the middle. Would you sacrifice your own personal privacy for the sake of government free reign to monitor you for security purposes?

Somehow there is a feeling that the jury will be perpetually out on this one.

Grasp is always here to assist you if you feel your computer has been exposed to a security risk.
