In the market today there are so many different types of USB connection for different purposes. Different manufacturers have created different connector types to fit the varying different requirements of their devices. USB = “Universal Serial Bus”. But its amazing how little of that “U” for Universality there is in that. Apple claims to have put the “U” back in USB though and it seems the other big players such as Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, HP and so on, are warming to the USB-C (aka USB 3.1) standard for very good reasons.

So what is it?

The basic principle is a “one size fits all” connector type. USB-C can provide a whopping 100 watts of power, enough to power just about anything you care to think, it can transfer a whopping 10Gbps in data which is impressive. So immediately its appealing. The USB-C input type itself is small, and reversible. In other words, you don’t have to plug the USB-C input ‘the right way up’ for it to successfully plug in. It’s backwards compatible. By adding a little adapter, you can revert USB-C back to a standard USB 1, 2 or 3 connector types.

In Summary……

So in theory the USB-C standard is all encompassing such to the extent that different manufacturers won’t have to create new inputs for their own requirements. Intel won’t have to bother with Thunderbolt, Apple won’t have to bother with Lightning, and android and PC devices won’t have to faff around with Micro USB 3, Mini USB 3, Standard USB 3, USB-B and so on and so on. The new input it small enough, powerful enough, versatile enough and durable enough to tick all the boxes and we should all be thankful, as we can now freely forgot to bring our power supply for our MacBooks to work and simply turn to our colleagues with their Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc laptop and just borrow their power supplies instead!
