Yes, Windows 10 drops on the 27th July and yes there is really only one question on peoples minds. Even if there was a bit of software embedded within the new Windows 10 that could end world poverty, even if Windows 10 could gently wake you up in the morning with a lullaby, then beam you to work and do all your work for you, even if Windows 10 provided you winning lottery numbers on a weekly basis – the only thing anyone really wants to know is “have they brought back the proper start menu?”.

Yes they have. If you don’t believe me, see above. You might even say it’s got a bit of an legacy XP aesthetic to it, no? With Windows 8 and the ‘band-aid-esque’ Windows 8.1 release, it was easy to overlook how well the current OS platform actually performed. The bluescreens of death were down to a minimum and they were even signs that the driver recognition had upped its game also but they attempted a minimalism and a touchscreen emphasis that was largely rejected as a bit of a false prophecy. So now Windows 10 is upon us. What does Windows 10 offer us and what features are going to be a hit or a miss?

Windows 10, is a free upgrade for a year for those on Windows 7 and 8. We’re particularly intrigued to learn more about “Project Spartan” the completely new internet browser that will replace Internet Explorer, a nice new scrolling virtual desktop program that looks rather slick and “Continuum” –  a program that provides clean switching between a touch-screen orientated Windows 10 interface and a more PC traditional interface. There are some small concerns though. Microsoft seem to be beating us again with the “Bing” stick and Bing is not just a nuisance browser now but fully integrated into the all knowing Cortana program and will be pretty much unavoidable on a lot of the new OS functionality. Still present also is the much maligned Metro apps interface present that caused so much consumer backlash, however Microsoft argues its been integrated a little bit more sympathetically and smartly. We live in hope.

As with all new Windows OS releases perhaps leave it down to us or initial consumers to get a feel for how well the new platform performs but here at Grasp were quietly optimistic based on the Beta tests. Windows 10 seems to indicate Microsoft is not using its substantial influence to force us into tech were not ready for such as the supposed “touch-screen revolution”, instead they seem to be listening to the constructive critique, taking their past failures on the chin and moving on.
