Uber, the San Francisco based taxi app firm that have taken their app worldwide are now pushing the envelope a bit further. Working closely with Volvo, Uber are now set to roll out a pilot fleet of driver-less taxis to collect passengers in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania early September 2016.

Set against the background of Google also pursuing this technology aggressively themselves, everyone seems somewhat taken aback by the speed and forcefulness that the combined Volvo/Uber project has suddenly appeared. Cards close to the chest indeed.

Uber has some 7000 odd employees and this could very well be another classic example of man vs machine with machine again proving the cost effective and dare we say it; safer option. Most of us are somewhat aware that our air travel is a largely computer controlled process with pilots playing more of a supervisory role but on the roads, in congested cities, with a mixture of automated and human drivers will a computer understand the intracacies and varying driving cultures of the busiest cities around the globe?

The proof will begin in Pittsburg. Hopefully next year we wont be hearing of renegade automated taxi’s dropping their passengers off conveniently down the side of a hill or up a tree.
