The Dark Net You Didn’t Know Was There – Grasp 15′

Yes this is new to us as well, but my my, what a Pandora’s box it could prove to be. As the name would suggest, this is a “Dark Internet”. On face value alone, its the the dark seedy back alleys of the internet, a segregated internet service that uses “I2P”  (fully encrypted IP internet provision) to create completely anonymous internet browsing. You can’t jump on Chrome, Firefox or Edge to access this service, no no, you must use “Tor”. The whole service is an overlay on the existing internet network but only accessible through such browsers that only connect to other encrypted devices.

Why an anonymous internet service? Well, as our conventional internet expands exponentially, the more people are growing concerned with what real privacy they have. People are simultaneously digitalising and storing their lives online and can never be sure to what extent this is being monitored. Dark Net is written with mind to keep mass surveillance away from its users. It has also provided a great platform for whistle blowers and online activists to voice themselves with impunity. Unfortunately for all the good intentions there is as you would probably expect, the dark side of the dark net.

How about an online platform that bares a very striking resemblance to eBay, however an eBay for the sole purpose of advertising, selling and getting customer feedback on all manner of illicit substances. Yup, that was there for a while. It was shut down and removed after some extremely large-scale investigative measures, but not before it grossed around $1 billion dollars in revenue.

This is just one of many hundreds of ways the anonymous dark net service is being used. The infamous website 4chan showed us how a website for anonymity can produce both ingenuity from the online community in equal measures to inexcusable evil. But now there is a whole internet service adopting this model, growing by the minute, all the many great achievements and detriments of the online community are set for a shot of adrenaline. With Facebook even getting in on the dark net action early, it is only a matter of time before dark net sees the light of day and people are making the switch to anonymity.
