A Word Of Caution To Our Lenovo Owners – Beware The Superfish – Grasp ’15

Lenovo have been making some cracking hardware and some very easy on the eye laptops. However it seems they’ve just committed their first big whoopsy that Lenovo owners should be aware of (please see below for affected models).

As many will be aware, manufacturers like to think of themselves as useful by installing a pre-bundle of their own proprietary software, 99.9% of which is of no use to anyone except those who created it. Such a bit of software exists for Lenovo in the shape of Superfish. Superfish is a pre-installed bit of software that is supposed to “enhance the shopping experience” of its users. Strip away the marketing nonsense from that statement and in reality what you have is a bit of software that snoops on your web browsing and also has the nerve to slip adverts subversively into your browser pages.

Now Superfish in itself isnt designed to harm your laptop. What it leaves itself open to could. The issue is that Superfish is installed at the root level, in other words its really designed to be an embedded part of your device. If you’ve had your device pre-built by Grasp then you should be fine, no Superfishes there. But! naughty, naughty Lenovo, very naughty. If Superfish is hacked (via its security certificate ironically) then a user could be open to alot of potential hacking risks, most of which would require some of your input i.e relying on you to log into a fake website and this type of thing.
